Позиции Конфуция: форма поведения как часть истины.
Форма — не украшение: без неё достоинства вырождаются.
Почтительность без ритуала — суетливость, осторожность — трусость, смелость — смута, прямота — грубость. Li — рамка, которая делает качества добродетелями.
[8.2] 恭而無禮則勞，慎而無禮則葸，勇而無禮則亂，直而無禮則絞。
Respectfulness, without the rules of propriety, becomes laborious bustle; carefulness, without the rules of propriety, becomes timidity; boldness, without the rules of propriety, becomes insubordination; straightforwardness, without the rules of propriety, becomes rudeness.
Но форма без человечности пуста.
Ритуал и музыка не работают в бесчеловечном; нефрит и шёлк, колокола и барабаны — ещё не ритуал и не музыка.
[3.3] 人而不仁，如禮何？
If a man be without the virtues proper to humanity, what has he to do with the rites of propriety?
[17.11] 禮云禮云，玉帛云乎哉？
Are gems and silk all that is meant by propriety?
В обряде выбирай скупость и скорбь, а не блеск.
Существо ритуала — в мере и чувстве, не в размахе.
[3.4] 禮，與其奢也，寧儉。
In festive ceremonies, it is better to be sparing than extravagant. In the ceremonies of mourning, it is better that there be deep sorrow than a minute attention to observances.
Воспитание завершается формой: Оды — ритуал — музыка.
Поэзия пробуждает, ритуал ставит характер, музыка отделывает.
[8.8] 興於詩，立於禮。成於樂。
It is by the Odes that the mind is aroused.
It is by the Rules of Propriety that the character is established.
It is from Music that the finish is received.
